Hey Alexa, Tell Me About Voice Search SEO

Remember messing around with Siri and getting a kick out of the responses? Back then, voice searches were the craze to mess around with but now with the rise of virtual assistants such includes of Alexa and Google Home; will voice searches on these devices be a game changer for SEO?

Often some may find it’s easier to voice search instead of typing on the pocket-size screens, like the 53% of people who are using voice-enabled technology to search for information on interested products.

Think again. Alexa may be the Beyoncé to Siri’s Kim Kardashian with more services and commands provided, however, sometimes what you want to search for on Alexa may not give you the results you wanted.

Of course since Alexa is own by Amazon, the queries you asked on this digital assistant will first recommend products from Amazon prime then the other searches on its search engine provider, Bing (I know, out of all search engines it has to be Bing).

So what does this mean to businesses who implements SEM? Basically, your products may not rank up on Alexa despite having quality keywords or phrases, inbound links or any other white hat techniques implemented. If you’re not rank first or second then you don’t stand a chance in getting your product out on Alexa.

As of now, majority of the public are searching on search engines rather than on voice-search assistants but it’s not to say that in the near future this may not change. We are living in an age of the IoT so businesses should keep in mind of their future SEO plans.

On that note, what’s your thoughts on voice-search assistants in SEO and whether this may overall affect SEM.

  1. Hey Alexa, awesome post! I think this will definitely make it more difficult for companies still using Social Engine Marketing. With technology changing so rapidly companies are only going to survive if they keep up too.

    1. Indeed. It’s only a matter of time until consumers are opting to search their goods on digital assistants like Alexa than on search engines. This would means that companies would have to play the rules of Amazon to get these high ranks on these devices.

  2. Hey Carmen definitely agree with your in saying search engine marketing is pretty useless when considering voice-searching devices. I think as people are going to say specific phrases to Alexa then they are searching for specific things and hopefully lower budget marketing companies are still accessible like this as it is highly targeted and likely to find the specific content more relevant. Do you think this is a good way for companies to think or will bigger companies just dominate the voice-search sector?

    1. Hey Kann Desovali,
I can definitely see how this may lower budget for companies and allow target content for consumers. I think bigger companies would most likely dominate the voice-search sector unless smaller companies cooperate and pay voice-searching devices like Alexa to get the ranks. This would then defeat the purpose of a lower marketing budget for businesses. But who knows, we have to see how the future unfolds 🙂

I’m not quite sure if Google home has this type of algorithm yet but I won’t be surprised if they do implement such strategies in the future.
